Exciting News - How Are You Feeling? prints available for order!!

After working with a local graphic artist and printer to create a unique raffle prize for a Pennsylvania Psychological Association event, I decided I loved the outcome so much, not only did I have one made for my own office, but decided to offer prints for order.

This "How are you Feeling?" emotions poster would be a unique addition to any behavioral health care office or classroom and will brighten up the space while being functional at the same time.  Providers can use it to spur discussion of current emotion state and prompt even young children to identify their feelings and triggers that lead to those feelings.

Available on fine art paper in 3 easy-to-frame sizes, this print also makes a great gift!

Delight

My most recently completed painting pretty much sums up how I have been feeling that last few weeks.  I have been lucky enough to do some traveling and sightseeing both around my home, and a bit around the country, and have gotten to see some old friends in the process.  There is also the prospect of some collaborative creative work with a treasured mentor from another part of my life (who, IMHO, happens to be quite the creative genius), and that has me nearly squealing with delight.  What a way to finally start a late-to-arrive spring!

A good day

Yesterday was a good day.  I got not one, but two, one-woman shows scheduled (fall 2014 and summer 2015 – details to follow).  In my book, that’s an exciting start to a morning. Though, in my usual style, that excitement was quickly followed by a mixture of self-doubt and self-deprecation.  Would I be ready?  Would by paintings be ‘good enough’?  Why has this taken me so long?    Blah, blah, blah.  However, in a concerted effort to challenge these automatic, and negative, thoughts, I followed them up with a big, red, screaming “STOP.”  Yes, I’ve been back in the Coal region for 5 ½ years, and yes, these are the first one-artist showings I’ve secured in that time, and no, Northumberland County isn’t NYC, or DC or even Philly.   But this is ‘home,’ and I’m creating, and my work is getting out there, and people like it.  And, most importantly, I’m happy.

And, in addition to scheduling those two shows yesterday, I also successfully bench-pressed 100lbs (my current goal in training for an upcoming lifting/running event), got an email via USFencing requesting my participation in a research study as an “emerging/elite athlete,” (What?  Who?  Me? – insert sheepish grin), I worked a little bit on a research project of my own in the hospital, and was sincerely thanked by a parent for helping with their kid.   In fact, looking back on them, the last few weeks have been pretty darn good.  I helped a teen lose 20 pounds, was told I was important in the life of another, won a local epee competition, and traveled to see good friends.

Now there are qualifiers on all those ‘victories’ – there always are:  I need to be able to lift more weight by the end of February, their definition of ‘emerging/elite athlete’ was fairly loose and several hundred people got that email, my research project is moving at a snail’s pace compared to what I’d be doing in a major university, the competition only had 9 people, and another teen I work with is still struggling with symptoms a year into treatment.

And so quickly the half-full glass becomes half-empty.  There is always work that can be done faster, projects that could be done better, people who are “succeeding” more than I am.   And maybe if I gave up any one of the things I am doing, I could probably do those other things, faster, better, more ‘successfully’ (whatever that means).   Sure, for every bout I win against someone half my age, there’s another I lose to someone twice my age, sometimes my run turns into a walk (okay, a hobble) when one of the joints in my falling-apart-faster-than-it-should-for-my-age body is screaming, there will be another family who storms out of my office because they don’t like what I’ve said, and I’ll likely bring home more paintings than I sell at whatever the next exhibit it.  But I am doing all of that.  All of it.  And that’s pretty darn amazing. Because someday, I will not be able to do this.  But today is not that day.

So I’m going to resolve to practice gratitude for all my little victories this year.  Notice them, speak them, and, sometimes, share them.  After all, isn’t that what creating art is about – noticing and sharing tiny pieces of beauty and meaning that otherwise go unnoticed and buried under daily labors and defeats.

Inspired

It's been too long between my last new painting and this one.  This time of year it's hard for me to find inspiration since I am most moved by intense color, and light/shadow contrasts, and the world around me is so drained of color in the winter, replaced with shades of white and muted neutrals.  Nothing against the winter, it's just doesn't move me, creatively.  That combined with holiday tasks and 'day job' flares that take so much more of me, and I haven't wandered into my studio in weeks.  This painting was actually done before the holidays, but didn't get my seal of approval until just this week.  I got inspired around Veteran's Day and started working on this.  I'm thinking it might launch a series of intense, close-up portraits, but time will tell.

It's Bloomsburg Fair time!!

If you are coming out to the Bloomsburg Fair this week (which I know you are!), please take some time to visit the Arts and Crafts building.   In addition to local adult artists, there will be many elementary and high school students showing off their work.  Support our next generation of talent!  And if you notice any names you recognize, be certain to tell them you saw their work there.  I remember being a student and how special it felt to have my work hanging somewhere -- someone taking the time to look at it and then tell me about made it even better.

Pretty cool....

Just got back from dropping off the largest grouping of my work to be shown at one time in a LONG time.  And it felt pretty cool to see all the pieces, from different times and different states of mind, laid out on the walls.  There's this brand-spanking new one, just finished and framed, along with an old one that hasn't seen the outside of my studio for over a decade.  I think it was especially nice to see her up on the wall.

If you are interested, the gig is at:
MultiCounty Land Abstract Company
21 E. Main Street
Bloomsburg, PA

I'm one of the featured artists for June and July.

Oh, if you go, pick up one of my fancy new business cards.  I feel all official now.....

New Painting

It seems that my stay on the other side of the world has (temporarily?) replaced the hills of the Susquehanna Valley as my muse.  How long that will last, I’m not certain, but there were so many things (people, landscape, experiences) that moved me, I think the detour may take me quite a few places off the previously beaten path.
Here, for your viewing pleasure is the first Filipino piece.  While inspired directly by a scene surreptitiously caught on a broken dirt road in the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, it could be a scene from any number of dusty, hill side abodes on either side of the world -- in this century or the one before.  There was something about the old woman and the dish rag that reminded me of someone long ago, and I could almost hear the word “Baba” echoing through the hills.  She was distantly, hauntingly, familiar, yet exists a world away from any place I had known before.   I have a sense I won’t be alone in this feeling when this painting makes its debut.

To Everything There is a Season

Change is inevitable.  Without change, there is no growth.  Without growth, there is no life.  And without life, well, that’s that.  My art has changed with time much as my life has.  The thoughts, circumstances, people and emotions that inhabited my life at various times also inhabited my art, either explicitly or implicitly.  It goes without saying that as the landscapes of my life changed, so would the things I create.  To try to make a creative muse last beyond its natural time is futile.  When the life is gone from it, so is its utility.  And we move on.  Change I can accept.

But the art, itself – that which was created – should last forever, right?  What was made stands as a testimonial to what was.  After all, isn’t that what art is about?  Something meant to last beyond the time, place, moment and artist?  Except, of course, when it doesn’t.

This weekend was a hard reckoning of this fact.  Faced with paintings that have seen too much time and less than perfect conditions, I made the choice to neither fight to keep them as they are, nor to discard them as relics of the past, but to change them into different, new, versions of themselves.  While I can embrace change, and the notion of repurposing something worn, but loved, into something useful again, this was no small feat.  These paintings were children born from a different me.  And while that me no longer exists, she did, as did they, and they were loved.  Admitting they have passed their usefulness in their original form—that I allowed them to fall into decay—was hard enough.  Taking a knife to them even harder.  But it seemed like the last, best way to pay them, and the time they came from, the respect they deserved.  Far better than letting them continue down the descent, dusty and unseen, simply because I lacked the courage to do otherwise.

The first of these reincarnations will make its debut soon.  While I am pleased with the life I have breathed into it again, I still don’t know quite how I feel about it.   Is it merely a shadow of its former self?  Or something truly better?  Regardless, it was still really hard.  And there is more repurposing to be done.  Like the first run after weeks of slacking, I dread the discomfort and pain that will come as I am squarely in the middle of it.  But I hope that on the other side will be catharsis, and a sense that it was worth it, and that I (and they) am better for it.
